Sudden Weight Loss in Children

Any change in our physical appearance might suggest something else. Take for example, sudden weight loss in children. Some are easy to identify its root cause such as under- or malnutrition, hyperactivity, depression and disease infected like dengue hemorrhagic fever. Other reasons are not visible or hard to determine such as caused by genetics and fast metabolic processes. For whatever reasons, this phenomenon should not be taken for granted.

Some can be addressed immediately particularly the behavioral ones. Sudden weight loss can be associated with being picky or choosy among foods. Full-time nannies and parents know about this. The usual intervention applied is to make the food delectable without compromising its nutritional content. Others make use of positive reinforcement; wherein they give rewards for children who will not leave leftovers. Another method is to talk to them; maybe they are already experiencing something within their bodies.

Furthermore, we must monitor what they consume. It is a common knowledge that certain foods and herbs are purgative in nature such as papaya, sweet potato, mangoes, etc. This could be a contributing factor for their weight change. Also certain foods might give them parasite problems so we must ensure that food handling, preparation and storage is clean.

In any case, forced starvation of children could also lead to sudden weight loss in children.

Now let us talk about diseases that can cause sudden weight loss. First is dengue fever. This mosquito-caused disease may lead to excessive blood loss. In return, certain body parts diminish in size because there is insufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients. Second is cancer. Experts say that weight loss can be secondary symptom particularly in ovarian, pancreatic and hematologic cancers. Third is gastrointestinal ailments including peptic ulcer.

To remedy such problem is early detection. If you feel something different in your child, don't hesitate to ask for a pediatrician's professional advice.

Sudden Weight Loss in Cats

Unexplained sudden weight loss among cats? Obviously, it is not an overnight phenomenon among our pets. They could be probably experiencing health problems for quite some time. The usual suspects are: anorexia or appetite loss, which could lead to hepatic lipidosis; microorganisms – infected diseases such as coccidiosis, cryptosporidiosis, and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV); kidney problems such as glomerulonephritis, diabetes, and stone problems; dietary problems; and finally external parasites such as mites and fleas.

The basic solution to address this issue is to provide them the love and care they need. To be specific, we need to know the right food to be consumed; when to take them to bath (although, it is really challenging to groom our feline pets); how to give them exercise and train them and finally when to take them to the veterinarian. In short, like us we need to set a quality time with them so we can fully understand and immediately notice if there are changes in their physical state.

Maybe some will ask how I will know if there is something wrong with them despite of providing all these things. Honestly, we don’t expect them to talk about their issues but rather they manifest or communicate with us through their behaviors. Sometimes, they will purr around from time to time, feel very heavy and lazy, always scratching, etc. Or maybe, you notice that their wastes are not normal etc.

You are fortunate if they are already healthy especially if you bought them from a reliable pet store or entrusted by someone who really know the pet. However, just a reminder, taking care of a pet cat is like having a car. We need to review how to troubleshoot basic problems and provide at least first aid for them.

Sudden Weight Loss in Pregnant Women

Sudden weight loss during pregnancy, which can be healthy only if you are an obese woman into the family way, can most likely be caused by a woman’s changing hormones and are mostly manifested through constant feeling of nausea and frequent vomiting. Some other pregnant women may also suddenly lose weight because of the unusual shift in their appetite; sometimes they would want to eat a single type of food the whole day or some other time they wouldn’t want to eat at all.

If this condition persists, a woman simply won’t gain enough weight several months into her pregnancy, which could either mean that her baby is not developing properly or is developing full well at the expense of the mother, feeding from the nutrients from the mother’s body. To be on the safe side, and for your peace of mind, it is best to check with her medical practitioner and seek advice on what to do best. Sudden weight loss while pregnant may mean your baby’s development is being compromised and it will do you well, of course, to be sure that your baby is getting all the nutrients and minerals he needed necessary for his proper formation and brain development, and that he will have a normal birth rate too.

If you are suddenly losing weight during pregnancy, your medical practitioner may inquire about a possible recent illness, your rest or sleeping patterns, or he might delve into your work and stress history. He might also investigate on cases of dehydration and may ask you to rest easy on any diet restrictions.

Chances are the causes of your vomiting and nausea (or what we call the proverbial morning sickness) will go away in a few weeks, allowing you to gain back the pound you lose, but in case of excessive vomiting to the point of dehydration, your doctor might prescribed a pill to keep it at bay. You are best to veer away from too much tasty and oily food as these can trigger your ill feelings, too. Try eating small and frequent meals and snack on crackers to keep the nausea and the ugly weight loss away.
