Sudden weight loss can be linked to several major conditions. Many of these conditions can be either severe or mild. However it is always good to know what you're dealing with.
Having your thyroid tested is the best place to start. This can be done by a simple blood sample done in a physician's office. If the thyroid is overactive, a condition called hyperthyroidism is caused and rapid weight loss can ensue.
Crohn's disease is another possibility. This disease affects the digestive system and can cause the intestines to empty frequently which results in frequent diarrhea. Other effects of Crohn's diseases can be vomiting, eye pain and skin rashes. In order to diagnose this disease, your doctor will have to run multiple tests.
Diabetes can also be a factor. Have a blood sugar test to rule out this possibility. When blood sugar levels are too high, muscle is broken down and this can result in unhealthy weight loss.
Consider doing some type of screening for cancer. Rapid weight-loss is one of the most common side effects of advanced cancer. If cancer is an option, usually extreme fatigue will also follow.
Last but not least, research IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). According to research done by Per Dr. Marcelle Pick, one in five Americans suffer from IBS. It mainly affects women and can be extremely difficult to diagnose as there are a myriad of symptoms.
